Required Proof of Settlement Funds: Essential Guidelines

Savings and financial account planning documents

For many Federal Skilled Worker programs, applicants must provide clear proof of settlement funds. This requirement ensures that new arrivals have the financial support needed to settle in Canada while looking for work.

What Counts as Valid Proof of Funds?

Your funds must be readily available and unencumbered. This means they cannot be tied up in real estate, long-term non-liquid investments, or personal debts.

  • Liquid Assets: Cash in checking and savings accounts is preferred.
  • Unencumbered Funds: The money must belong to you, without any outstanding loans or liens.
  • Official Bank Letters: Letters must be printed on official bank letterhead and detail your account history, balances, and current debts.

Estimated Settlement Funds for 2026

While requirements are updated annually, single applicants generally need around $14,000 to $15,000 CAD, with amounts increasing for each additional family member.

"Providing incorrect or incomplete financial records can lead to application rejections or, in some cases, misrepresentation charges. Ensuring compliance with IRCC proof of funds rules is critical."

Avoiding Common Pitfalls

Avoid sudden, large cash deposits without clear documentation of where the money came from, as these can trigger audits. Gifted funds must be supported by an official gift deed confirming that the money does not need to be repaid.
